See, We Told You The NBA Was Easy Money This Year

Editor’s note: This article was in our possession yesterday, but we ran with a story ripping the Cardinals manager a new one. As a Cubs fan (hahaha), Murf should be OK with that.

Well, we’re about 6 weeks away from the end of another magical (cough) NBA season, and in my house, that only means one thing: “How much money do I have left to bet on MLB over/unders?”

Let’s start with the big winners.

LAKERS under 57.5.  This one was in by Thanksgiving.  The Dwight Howard experiment proved a lot of skeptics correct… this is Kobe’s team, and Dwight’s skin is way too thin for the Lakers spotlight.  To his credit, he truly is only 75%… and still leading the league is rebounding, but the way he’s handled the media has been abysmal… and the never ending “will Dwight stay” soap opera has killed this team.  They may indeed sneak into the playoffs, but the Spurs or Thunder will run through them.

T’WOLVES under 39.  The Kevin Love injury to start the season really hindered this team, but his second major injury crippled them.  At 20-34, this money is already spent.

HAWKS over 43.  Thank you not trading Josh Smith, period.

The “feeling good, but still on the fence” bets

BULLS under 46.5.  This one hurt to play, but the uncertainty of DRose’s comeback made it a solid bet.  The Bulls really overachieved in the first half of the season, but their second half start, putting them at 32-25, has proved that the lack of a true superstar is too much to overcome.  Look for them to have a strong finish, but 46.5 means seems be 2 or 3 games out of reach.

HORNETS over 27.5.  One of my most favorite over/unders I’ve ever cheered for.  This team stinks, don’t get me wrong… but all we need is 8 more wins, out of 24 games… very doable.  Early injuries to Anthony Davis, as well as Eric Gordon’s inability to play effectively in back-to-back games, have really hurt this team, but the gritty Grievous Vasquez, haha, has held them together.

KINGS under 30.5.  At 19-33, I was scared… but after dumping 6 straight, they’re now 19-39 and I’m feeling great about these bums.  With nothing remotely to play for the rest of the way, I’m hoping this one is in by April 1st.

The “down to the wire” bets

DENVER over 51.  After a rough schedule, this team has been a nice story.  They’re sitting at 36-22, and I’m feeling pretty good because they’re the best home team in the NBA, and 14 of their last 24 games are at the Pepsi Center.  I need 15-9 for the push… but I still like the over

RAPTORS over 34.5.  Hello Rudy Gay!  This team started horribly, but are now on pace for 33 wins.  Fingers crossed.

JAZZ over 43.  At 31-26, they’re on pace for 44 wins… but they’re still the Jazz and no one cares.

I’ll be in the basement crunching for the MLB for the next few weeks… so please send me your thoughts and prognostications.
